Canterbury Park to Host Claiming Crown in 2008

December 7, 2007 -- Shakopee, MN -- The Claiming Crown will return to Canterbury Park in Shakopee, MN next season on Saturday, August 2. Known nationally as thoroughbred racing’s day for “blue collar” racehorses, the 10th annual Claiming Crown will consist of seven races, five on dirt and two on turf, and will offer a total of $600,000 in purse money.

Co-founded by the National Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (NHBPA) and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA), the inaugural Claiming Crown was held at Canterbury Park in 1999. The suburban Minneapolis racetrack has played host every year except 2002 when the event was held at Philadelphia Park and 2007 when western Kentucky’s Ellis Park was the site.

“Claiming Crown has become our signature day,” said Canterbury’s Vice President of Racing Eric Halstrom. “The racing fans in Minnesota have always turned out for Claiming Crown and produced record days for Canterbury. I expect that they will embrace its return to Minnesota in 2008.”

Claiming Crown has annually drawn the attention of trainers and owners of the best claiming horses in the game including Eclipse Award winning owner Richard Englander, 2006 leading owner by wins Maggie Moss, and perennial leading trainers Scott Lake and Steve Asmussen.
