Won Awesome Dude Wins $150,000 Claiming Crown Jewel

 

 

 

Claiming Crown 2008 logoAugust 2, 2008 - Shakopee, MN - Following a one-year absence, the Claiming Crown, a seven-race, $600,000 event saluting North America’s best claiming horses, returned to Canterbury Park on Saturday. This marks the eighth time it has been held at the suburban Minneapolis racetrack. On track, the crowd of 10,188 wagered $558,645 on the seven Claiming Crown races. Import handle on Claiming Crown races from wagering sites throughout the country totaled $2,175,818, an increase of 16% over the 2006 figure.

Won Awesome Dude won the richest race of the day, the $150,000 Claiming Crown Jewel. Trained by Daulton Nedrick and ridden by Casey Lambert, the 5-year-old raced mid-pack in the field of nine in the early stages of the race before making a move on the far turn. He collared the leader mid-stretch and went on to win by one-length, returning $7.60. The final time of the one mile and one-eighth main track race was 1:49.97. Won Awesome Dude, owned by Kuehne Racing, qualified to run in the Jewel by racing for a $20,000 maiden claiming price in his career debut in May of 2007 at Lone Star Park. He had not been entered in a claiming race since that start and recently won a $50,000 stakes at Manor Downs in Texas.

Antrim County won the $50,000 Iron Horse, returning $5.40. Chippewa Court ($5.40), trained by Merrill Scherer, won the $75,000 Glass Slipper. The $50,000 Allied Waste Express went to Extra Exclusive who paid $7.80. Scherer won his second race of the day when 16-1 longshot Cat Hop won the $100,000 John Deere Tiara. Eagle Storm, owned by Detroit Lakes, MN residents Curt and Sharon Johnson (S E J Stables Inc.), won the $100,000 Daily Racing Form Rapid Transit, returning $9.60. Wagering favorite Self Made Man ($4.00) won the $100,000 Bremer Bank Emerald.

The $100,000 Lady Canterbury Stakes was also run on Saturday. The one-mile turf race for fillies went to the post with 11 runners. Quiet Queen, at odd of 30-1, won by a neck after a resolute stretch drive and returned $63.60 to win. Owned by Sam and Joan Pieper of Murfreesboro, TN, the 5-year-old mare has now won six of 18 career starts and has earnings of more than $150,000. She is trained by David Kassen.
